1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. Similar technologies — local storage, pixels and tracking scripts — perform comparable functions. Together they allow a site to remember choices, keep sessions secure and measure how the site is used.

2. Strictly necessary cookies

These are required for the site to work and are set without consent, as permitted by law. They cannot be switched off through the banner.

• Language preference — remembers the language selected so that a manual choice is not overridden by automatic detection. Retained for 12 months.
• Cookie consent record — stores which categories were accepted or refused, and when. Retained for 12 months.
• Security and abuse prevention — protects the intake form against automated submission and abuse. Session-based.
• Administrative session — authenticates authorised staff on the administrative area. Session-based, and set only for staff.

3. Analytics and advertising cookies

These are set only if you accept them. They tell us which pages and which advertising campaigns lead people to request a case review, so that we can spend an advertising budget sensibly.

• Advertising measurement pixel — records that a page was viewed or a form completed after arriving from an advertisement, and supports measurement and audience features offered by the advertising platform. Retained for up to 13 months.
• Campaign parameters — records which campaign, source and medium a visit came from, so that a submission can be attributed correctly.
• Session analytics and replay — records, in anonymised form, page views, clicks, scrolling and a reconstruction of the visit, so we can see where a page is confusing. Anything typed into the case review form is masked and never recorded, and the administrative area is excluded entirely. Retained for up to 12 months.

These technologies are provided by third parties who act as independent or joint controllers for their own processing. Their use of data is governed by their own privacy notices.

4. Automatic country detection

To show the site in an appropriate language, the country associated with your IP address is read at the moment of the request. It is used only to select a language and is not stored in a cookie. A manual language selection always takes precedence and is remembered in the language preference cookie.

5. Managing your choices

• Use the cookie banner to accept or refuse non-essential categories when you first visit.
• Reopen your cookie preferences at any time from the link in the site footer.
• Browser settings allow cookies to be blocked or deleted entirely. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent parts of the site, including the intake form, from working.
• Most browsers also offer a "do not track" or tracking-protection setting, which this site respects where the browser transmits it.

6. Changes

This policy is updated when the technologies used on the site change. The date at the top records the current version.
